CryoPen therapy is a type of cryotherapy, a medical procedure in which skin imperfections are literally frozen and killed. Using a special device known as the CryoPen, a fine jet of nitrous oxide is sent to the skin imperfection, causing its underlying tissue to crystalise, shatter, and then eventually die. The problem cells’ reproductive DNA is also destroyed, ensuring that your skin abnormality is gone for good. The process usually takes around a few weeks.

A key benefit of our CryoPen treatments is its accuracy; the nitrous oxide is applied at millimetre precision, which means no surrounding healthy skin is affected.

Although procedure times vary depending on the size and depth of the targeted area, applications still only last between five to thirty seconds. You should be finished and ready to go in a couple of minutes.

Over time, the cells targeted in cryotherapy sessions will shrivel and die. It typically takes a few weeks for you to enjoy the final result, but this can vary depending on the size and type of the lesion that you want removed. For example, skin tags turn black at the base and normally drop off after four weeks.

During the recovery period, as described above, you may experience some minor side-effects while the skin heals. These usually include sensitivity in the treated area and possible minor blistering, the latter of which can last for anything between a few hours to a few days. However, our cryotherapy device provides the best protection against blistering. You should always avoid touching or picking at the treated area following a procedure.

Please note that while the skin heals, the area may also appear darker in colour. This is natural and the skin will soon return to your natural tones.

Any discomfort with CryoPen Therapy is relatively minimal and fleeting. You will likely experience a slight stinging nettle-type sensation during treatment. This is caused by the nitrous oxide striking its target and only lasts a few seconds. However, some residual stinging may persist for a minute or two afterwards, which is perfectly natural.

You should hopefully find that one CryoPen treatment is enough. However, in some cases, a follow-up procedure may be required, and this will be monitored and advised by your physician during your free reviews. For example, if a wart or verruca has not disappeared after four weeks, the area may need a subsequent round of treatment.

Our cryotherapy procedures with the CryoPen are quick and efficient, and relatively risk-free. However, it may not be suitable for people with other conditions such as collagen and autoimmune disease and rheumatoid arthritis. It is also not suitable for women during pregnancy, nor on areas that have previously been treated with dermal fillers. We will discuss all contraindications with you.

CryoPen treatments are safe and effective, with excellent results. However, aftercare for the treated areas is also important in order for you to achieve the best possible outcome. There are some things that can affect the outcome…

Treatment is usually painless, or with slight discomfort. However, immediately after the treatment has been applied, you may experience any of the following (note: all of these will have been explained to you when you signed the consent form):

  • Redness due to the initial inflammation, this is normal and is part of the healing process. The area may also be slightly raised.
  • You may get a small dry scab, please do not pick or pull the scab. Allow it to come away by itself.
  • Itching may occur, usually within a few minutes of treatment. It usually lasts only a few minutes but may last up to an hour. It is due to release of histamine, and is totally normal in treatment of this kind.
  • Blisters may form with any treatment to the skin and can happen to anyone. Any blisters which do form, may last just a few hours or a few days dependent on the area that has been treated. Blistering may occur after treatment of any type of lesion. Any blistering will not affect the outcome of the treatment.

If blistering does occur, it is regarded as a normal occurrence. Do not pop the blister: it will go down on its own.

Should it burst, use a non-alcoholic wipe to clean the area and apply a smear of antiseptic cream. It may also be covered with a dressing/plaster

  • Scratch or pick the treated area. This will cause the area to take longer to heal and may cause damage to the skin.
  •  Do not use scrubs on the area, as this will damage the surface of the skin.

General healing expectations:

  • Most healing will take place from 4 to 6 weeks, however it may sometimes take longer than this, as all skin varies, and can take longer to regenerate.
  • If your immune system is compromised, you may still have treatment, but healing may take longer, and you may require further treatment.

  • During the healing time you may shower/wash as normal and use your usual cosmetics, including makeup, deodorants and moisturise creams.

Skin Tags:

  • These will tum darker from the base and will dry up and fall of as the skin heals beneath them over 1 to 6 weeks.
  • Larger tags may need a second treatment.
  • If the tag becomes sore or rubs against clothing it may be covered with a dressing or plaster.

  • These are generally small superficial cysts filled with keratin they usually flatten and vanish with a single treatment and require no aftercare.
  • Follow the advice for blisters should one form.

Pigmentation / Age or Liver Spots

  • The area will often become red and raised and will go down after a few hours. The pigment will then become darker and a dry crust will form.
  • When the crust falls away the new skin beneath is pink and shiny, it is important at this stage that you use sun block minimum factor 50 to prevent the pigmentation returning.

Cherry Angioma/Campbell de Morgan

  • The area will often become red and raised and will go down after a few hours.
  • The lesion will shrink away and slowly vanish over 2 to 4 weeks.

Warts and verrucae

  • As these are viral infections they may need more than one treatment to destroy the infected cells.
  • The second treatment can be completed 4 weeks after the first.
  • If you see black spots in the wart or verruca then it is dyeing away and should disappear over the next few weeks.
  • There is no specific aftercare. Follow the advice for blisters should one form.

Benign Moles

  • Following treatment, the mole will darken and crust over. As the fine crust slowly comes away the tissue will shrink and be paler than surrounding.
  • It will slowly blend into the normal pigment colour of the skin over the next few weeks.
  • It is important that you use sun block to prevent the skin from pigmenting dark again.

Seborrhoeic Keratosis:

  • Following the treatment, they will crust and darken.
  • As they heal the crusting may come away in patches.
  • The new tissue will come through paler than the surrounding area and requires sun block to protect it from pigmenting dark again.

  • It is important that you use sun block (factor 50) following treatment of any pigmented lesions to prevent them re-pigmenting. Ask your clinic about sun block, continue to wash, bathe and shower as normal. Pad the area dry afterwards, do not rub dry.
  • Continue to use cosmetics and deodorants and perfume as normal.
